Windsor (Ontario)

Windsor — a city on the south of Canada, Ontario province. It was founded in mid 20s of the 18th century. Its population is 307,877 people (2001). The city is located on a bank of the Detroit River. On the other bank of the river there stretches the city of Detroit, the USA. Windsor is connected with Detroit via a bridge and a tunnel.

Proximity to the American city of Detroit favors the fact that Windsor is centre of automotive industry of Canada. Here they produce equipment for automotive industry. Pharmaceutics, chemical industry, and metallurgy are also developed.

Young people of Detroit like visiting Windsor to drink alcohol, because in Ontario it is allowed  from the age of 19, while in Michigan (as anywhere in the USA) it is prohibited until 21.

Canadian government paid $34 million for the land plot, which is planned for construction of a new bridge to Detroit. 94 acre landplot purchased from Windsor represents less than a half of site required for the construction on Canadian side. The government is still negotiating with individuals and organizations in respect to purchase of the remaining 108 acres.

The purpose of joined Canadian-American project of construction of a six-lane bridge and control points is improvement of traffic along the overloaded crossing and modernization of facilities.


Today, Detroit and Windsor are Сconnected by a 1.5 km long two-lane tunnel and a 2.3 km long four-lane Ambassador Bridge, which are the busiest crossing points between the USA and Canada.
